Apologies if this has been discussed before but is it possible to remove the Sky Plus hard drive and copy all of the content across to my computer Mac - I have Eyehome Eye TV if that helps as watchable tv programmes / films.
My hard drive is very full with stuff I want to keep but copying to DVD takes time and i d rather have it on the computer and stored in Eye Home.

Yes, it s been discussed many, many time, but sadly the answer s still NO, not technically possible. Sky made sure with their encryption.

To add to this you need a valid Sky card to decode the pictures, as you will never be able to plug a Sky card into a PC you will never be able to transfer encrypted recordings over.

In theory it IS possible, but as it stands at the moment no-one has had the time or inclination to crack the encrypted data. The Sky feed is encrypted into a variant of the MPEG2 format which appears to have been developed soley to control their copyright to control what we see.
If you remove the HD place it into your Mac/PC the OS will return a format prompt or an error, as the file type is totally alien to any conventional computer.
Best way to get the data off is either hooking up your EyeTV if you have the EyeTV 200 or getting an HDD DVR if you need to edit the recordings. I m a fellow Mac user done the EyeTV thing, I used it on a couple of recordings but found it really long winded hated the way it attempted to re-encode everytime you made an edit. To be honest there isn t much available for the Mac in terms of consumer mpeg editors, but i ve tried it on the PC too found it only marginally easier. But by far the most straightforward solution is an HDD DVR a DVD recorder with a Hard Disk it will allow you to record Digital-to-Analogue-to-Digital with the minimum of loss in quality if using RGB will allow editing top tail ads etc. .
One question.. If you have Sky why have you got an EyeTV.
